Holiday Decoration Tips

For many, the Christmas tree is one of their favorite parts of the Christmas season. It’s often the first holiday decoration we put up, and it’s the focal point of our festive holiday decor. However, for those who are a little less than stellar at decorating your tree, it might leave you in distress this time of year. If you want to do a little more than throw up a pre-lit tree and toss some random ornaments on it, check out some tips from Katrina at The Premier Concierge.

Start with a nice artificial or living tree. I prefer an artificial spruce or aspen fir pre-lit because of the variable branches and authentic look. If you have a family tradition to go out and scour the streets or forest for a live tree, don’t stop that tradition. My family had the same tradition for years! However, during an end of season sale, I found my beauty and I’ve never gone back to the live version. I’m all so happy to send my husband to the attic to get our tree every season.

Next, fluffing the tree: You don’t have to worry about fluffing as much on a living tree, but pay attention to climate and watering as these trees thrive and stay fluffier if they are watered properly and are kept in cooler weather. If you have an artificial tree, don’t skimp on fluffing the branches or the lights- these two things set the stage for your awe-inspiring tree

Classic lights: this is personal preference of course, but I prefer classic warm lights over globe lights or multicolored lights. They provide a glow that showcases the ornaments without disguising them in random colors. I also prefer pre-lit because I don’t have to deal with the bulky lights weighing the tree down and of course pre-lit saves time.

Make a statement: My secret… hang ornaments with regard to color, size, shape, and TEXTURE. My process is simple, the large ornaments go first, then I work my way down from there, and repeat with each size. I work in sets of the same color and size globes, and similarly shaped ornaments. Note: taking down your Christmas tree in an organized fashion is of utmost importance for next year. After the holiday season, I’m sure to package all ornaments together so next year, I’m organized and ready to decorate.

Don’t forget to fill any gaps in the tree with floral picks, sprays or nature items like pinecones or twigs are great for filling in gaps.

Finally, finish strong with the top and the bottom! Toppers are important and really depend on the theme of your tree or family tradition. Many of my clients have heirloom angels that I use on their main tree. My family has a star because my two boys look forward to helping their dad place the star on the tree. But there are so many different options that are fun to try. We also use ribbon to make a big bow or leftover filler items to create a splash of fun and wow-factor at the top. Now let’s look under the tree… be sure to add a tree skirt and decorate under your tree, with wrapped gifts, or oversized ornaments.

We hope you are able to use these tips to put together your best Christmas tree ever!
